So why have oatmeal for breakfast?
Oatmeal is a great way to start your day because it is filling, energizing, and it tastes downright amazing! Eating oatmeal daily has been linked to health benefits such as reducing coronary heart disease as well as certain cancers, high blood pressure and and obesity.
It is filled with healthy calories and fiber, as well as manganese, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, carotenoids and flavonoids.
Oats are gluten free and so versatile you will not get bored of them (especially if you follow the below recipe suggestions, of course ;)).
Why soak oatmeal?
I don't soak my oatmeal every day. Not even close. When soaked, the oats get a different consistency, which most people either love or hate. But it is certainly worth a try. Why?
Well, if you soak your oats, their starches break down, improving digestibility. Their natural phytic acid is reduced, making them more easily absorbable. They are also higher in resistant starch, and it's just a great time-saver if you can't be bothered in the morning!
Do make sure to add an acidic medium and whole wheat flour to the oats in order to obtain these benefits, as oats themselves are low in phytase (which is needed to neutralize the phytate). When adding water/milk, make sure that it is slightly above room temperature.
Tip: add some chia seeds in this step. These, too, require soaking, and it's a great way to add some extra proteins to your breakfast!
