The eating disorder voice often gets loudest at the exact moments you're trying hardest to recover. You might know intellectually that it isn't you, while simultaneously feeling unable to tell where you end and it begins.
Maybe you're...
…negotiating with it all day
…obeying its demands just for a moment of relief
…arguing back until you're exhausted
…believing its thoughts are your own
…wondering who you'd even be without it
And you're not alone!
One of my clients recently told me the voice in her head felt like a roommate who never stopped talking. She wasn't avoiding food anymore... but she was exhausted! Recovery burnout bells were ringing.
In session, we gave the voice a name, and something shifted:
You can't argue with a fog, but you can decide whether Eddie gets to make your decisions.
Three weeks later, she messaged me between sessions: "it got loud again today. So loud! But who's Creepy Eddie to tell me what to do?"
Externalization at its finest π π
So, yes, if the ED voice (Eddie, Jeff, whatever you want to call it) has been getting louder for you recently, you're not alone. And this week's Recovery Messages episode is for you!
We cover:
π§ What externalizing actually means (and why it works)
π§ How to separate yourself from the eating disorder voice
π§ How to respond differently when it starts shouting over your recovery
→ Listen here: How to Externalize the Eating Disorder Voice When It Gets Loud
This is your reminder: the voice is not your identity. You can hear it loudly and still choose recovery.
If today's message helped, following or leaving a rating takes 10 secs... and helps another warrior find it when their ED voice gets loud too! π«ΆπΌ
P.S. If you've been sitting on the fence waiting for the "right time" to get support, or for things to feel better first…
You don't have to keep spending your days battling food thoughts, rules, guilt, and anxiety.
P.P.S. Mark your calendar: on September 15 I'm hosting a free workshop on starting recovery when you don't feel ready. Details coming soon x
