When the Food Guilt Feels Crippling

The guilt that shows up after eating is one of the most exhausting parts of recovery. You know intellectually that food is allowed, necessary, neutral... and yet it feels like you've broken the law.

    Maybe you're…

…replaying every bite long after the plate is empty
…promising to "make up for it" tomorrow
…needing reassurance that it's okay before you can move on
…reading the guilt as proof you're losing progress

One of my clients described the post-meal guilt like an alarm system that keeps going off in a house she's already moved out of.

There's nothing there that concerns her... and yet the familiar blaring is enough to keep her up at night!

In session, we stopped treating the alarm as information ("what did I do wrong?") and started treating it as noise from the old system ("ah… that old thing again") that no longer needs tending to ("not my problem anymore").

Shortly after, she messaged me between sessions:

"The alarm still rings sometimes. But I don't get up to check the windows anymore."

I thought this was such a beautiful analogy!

Because, over time, that alarm becomes background noise as you allow yourself to move onto bigger and better things.

This week's Recovery Messages episode is all about that alarm:

🎧 Why guilt after eating isn't evidence of failure
🎧 Where those food rules came from (hint: you never chose them)
🎧 How to surf the wave without obeying it

Remember that a feeling is not a verdict. You can feel guilty and still choose recovery.

If this resonated, following the show takes ten seconds, and helps another warrior find it when her alarm won't stop ringing either 🫢🏼

P.P.S. If you've been waiting for a sign to get real support... this is it πŸ‘€
